How to make Croque Monsieur Recipe - Such a simple idea and a family favorite.
SERVES 8
Ingredients:
16 slices sourdough bread
1/4 cup Dijonnaise or 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard mixed with 2 tablespoons
mayonnaise
8 ounces sliced ham
8 ounces Gruyère cheese, grated (2 cups)
Method:
Preheat a sandwich press. Spread 8 slices of the bread with the Dijonnaise. Top with ham and cheese and season with salt and pepper.
Place on the sandwich press (it’s okay to work in batches if you can cook only a few at a time). Top each with another slice of bread, close the press, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
Tip:
A Croque Monsieur becomes a “Madame” when a fried egg is placed on top because of its resemblance to a woman’s bosom! And if you don’t have a sandwich press, just butter the outside of the sandwiches and cook in a medium-hot nonstick skillet for 2 to 3 minutes per side, flipping once.
