How to make Dirty Chai Recipe - I enjoy all kinds of chai, but this particular blend is my favorite, not only because it tastes heavenly, but it offers a slow and steady energy boost and is incredibly soothing to digestion. Cloves, cinnamon, fennel, cardamom, and coriander all have gut-nourishing properties that aid digestion. Yerba mate tea contains about 80 mg of caffeine per 1 tablespoon (6 g), but the loads of antioxidants in the tea help slow caffeine absorption, making the stimulant uptake much more of a smooth progression. Yacon is sweet on the tongue, while promoting friendly bacteria to flourish in your gut.
Yield: Approximately one 12-ounce (355 ml) chai
Ingredients:
2 cardamom pods
1 whole clove
6 black peppercorns
8 fennel seeds
3 whole coriander seeds
1 tablespoon (6 g) yerba mate loose leaf tea
1 cup (235 ml) hot water (almost boiling)
1 piece (1/4 inch, or 6 mm) fresh ginger, peeled, and mashed
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup (120 ml) unsweetened almond milk
1 to 2 tablespoons (7 to 13 g) yacon syrup (to taste)
Method:
In a spice or coffee grinder, combine the cardamom, clove, peppercorns, fennel, and coriander. Pulse until you achieve a fine spice blend. Set aside.
In a french press, add the yerba mate leaves, ground spices, and ginger and cover with hot water. Let steep for 15 minutes.
Heat the almond milk and cinnamon on your stove over medium heat until almost boiling. Pour in the tea and heat for one minute.
Pour into your favorite mug, sweeten to taste with yacon syrup, and settle in to tea time!
